How to create collections in Shopify?

You can create collections under different logics, from which you must choose depending on the type and quantity of products you handle. The types of collections that are traditionally used are:

  • Segmentation by audience: men, women, children, etc.
  • Type of items: chairs, watches, books, etc.
  • Sales.
  • By size or color.
  • Seasons: Summer 2021, Valentine’s Day, etc.

It is important to understand that collections must fulfill a specific function. Over categorizing your products can make the customer complex as it will require them to make too many decisions about what they are looking for. Also, if the groups you choose cause few products to exist within each one, you expose a few products to the customer, losing sales opportunities. The idea is to guide the customer to products that may be of interest to them.

Prepare your Products

First of all, you must upload your products to Shopify. Within the information of each one, you must make sure to correctly fill in the fields that allow generating collections. These correspond to:

  • Kind of product: This information roughly indicates what the product is and can be grouped based on it.
  • Mark: This information is mainly relevant when working with products belonging to different brands, so it can be segmented by a supplier.
  • Price: Every product must have its value indicated and it is possible to create collections based on price ranges.
  • Tags/Tags: This is the way to relate products with greater freedom since by means of keywords it will allow you to connect even products that have no other field in common. To create them, it is a matter of typing one or two keywords and selecting ‘Enter’. You will see that they will be created as individual labels each time you do the above. A product can have infinite labels, but to use them correctly there are two rules that you must understand.

It is crucial to write the words in exactly the same way. So that the system can recognize them as the same. For example: using the label ‘Pencil’, ‘pencil’ and ‘PENCIL’ is not the same. So you must be clear if you will use accents and capital letters.

It is important to understand that these do not word as hashtags.

Let’s Start!

Once all the products are up with their complete information we will go to create the collections in the left column, then select ‘create collection’.

The template that you need to fill out will open. There are two ways to create collections in Shopify: manual and automated.

Manual Collection

This type of collection allows you to choose specific products manually. This will always be kept with the same products, unless you modify, add or delete it yourself.

This alternative is ideal for small collections with very specific objectives, which you will manage and change yourself. For example, favorites, recommended, featured, last chance, etc.

How to do

To create it you must indicate the name of the collection, you can add or not a description, select the ‘manual’ button in the type of collection and then save.

You will see that a new field will automatically appear under the description of the product which is delivered by a product search engine. Clicking on ‘search’ will open a pop-up in which you can select the products that will make up this collection, once you have finished select ‘add’ in the lower right corner.

The collection is automatically created with the products you chose, and you will see that they are now listed under the search engine. Manual Collection created!

To add new products, it is a matter of using the search engine in the same way, while to remove them is a matter of selecting the cross next to the product that you want to remove from the collection.

Also, if you select the ‘order’ drop-down, it will give you alternatives to manage the order in which the products are displayed within the collection.

Automated Collection

This type of collection allows you to tell the system to intelligently collect the products that share some indication that you give them. You basically create rules under which inventory products should be added. This alternative is fast and efficient to generate large groups of products as well as convenient if you have seasonal or rotating inventories.

Again you have to start naming the collection and then select the type of collection: automated. Below this, you will see a new field with the title of conditions. By default, “Products by tag” will appear, followed by “equals” and a blank space. This rule refers to the labels that you placed inside each product. If you select the empty field, all the labels that you have used will be displayed. You must choose from among them the keyword that will group the products in this collection and then save them.

The system will automatically collect all the products which have the selected label and will enter them into the collection. Done.

Once this rule is created, any new product to which you place the indicated tag will automatically be added to this collection.

To remove it from the group

you must remove the label inside the product. In this way, the system will keep this collection constantly updated, even if there are changes in the inventory.

To use other conditions when creating collections, you must select the button that says “product by tag”, this will open a drop-down that offers you different themes based on which you can generate rules.

Or you could use the combination of two labels, “gold” and “silver” to group all your products of metallic materiality. In this case, it should be noted that the products to enter this collection do not require following both conditions, but rather just one. In this way, the customer could be offered to see the group of watches that do not have fancy colors.

There are various combinations you can do, creating collections with offers segmented by the audience. Build your strategy and create the collections for your e-commerce site! So now you got your answer “How to create collections in Shopify?”
